You're doing everything right. Eating well. Sleeping (mostly). Taking your supplements. And yet your lashes feel thinner than they used to. Your brows are patchy in places they weren't before. Your hair doesn't hold the same weight it once did.
Before you blame age or genetics, consider this: your hormones were there first.
Your Hair Cycle Has a Hormonal Control Room
Every lash, brow hair, and strand on your head runs on a biological cycle — growth, transition, rest, and shed. What most people don't realise is that cycle is almost entirely directed by hormones. When those hormones shift, the cycle shifts with them. And the effects show up first in the places you'd least expect: your lash line, your brow hairs, your hairline.
Here are the most common hormonal disruptors and what they're actually doing.
Oestrogen: The Density Hormone
Oestrogen is one of the key regulators of hair density and fullness. It prolongs the active phase of the hair cycle, keeping more hairs in growth mode for longer. When oestrogen levels decline during perimenopause, post-pill, or as a natural part of ageing that protective effect fades. The result: lashes that look less defined, brows that thin at the outer edges, and hair that loses its weight and volume gradually over time.
This is one of the most common and most overlooked reasons women notice changes in their lashes and brows in their mid-30s onward.
DHT: The Follicle Shrinker
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an androgen present in both men and women, and in higher concentrations it's known to miniaturise hair follicles causing individual strands to become progressively finer and shorter over time. It's the primary driver behind androgenetic hair thinning, which affects both sexes and can begin as early as the late 20s.
Hair that seems to grow back thinner than before, a widening part, or a receding hairline are all common signs of DHT-related shedding. The follicle hasn't disappeared but it's been suppressed.
Cortisol: The Silent Saboteur
Stress is not abstract when it comes to hair and lashes. Chronically elevated cortisol, the stress hormone disrupts the hair cycle by prematurely pushing follicles into the resting phase, triggering a type of diffuse shedding known as telogen effluvium. You may notice it as increased shedding in the shower, thinning across the scalp, or lashes that seem to fall more than usual.
The challenge is that the effects of a stressful period often appear 2–3 months after the event itself, which makes it easy to miss the connection.
Thyroid Hormones: When Everything Slows Down
Both an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) and an overactive one (hyperthyroidism) can disrupt the hair cycle significantly. Thyroid hormones regulate cell metabolism — including the rapid cell division that drives hair and lash production. When thyroid function is off, hair and lashes are among the first places it shows: diffuse thinning, brittle strands, and loss across the outer third of the brows are classic indicators.
If you've noticed changes across all three areas simultaneously, and especially if accompanied by fatigue or temperature sensitivity, a thyroid panel is worth raising with your doctor.
Sleep: The Repair Window You Can't Skip
Growth hormone which plays a central role in cell regeneration and follicle repair — is predominantly released during deep sleep. Consistently poor or disrupted sleep doesn't just leave you tired; it shortchanges the overnight repair cycle that keeps your lashes, brows, and hair in their best condition. Even a few weeks of inadequate sleep can visibly affect density and texture.
What You Can Do
Hormone shifts aren't always within your control but how you support your hair, lashes, and brows through those shifts is. A consistent conditioning routine creates the foundation for your features to look their best, even as your body changes around them. That's the philosophy behind the ILASH.

ILASH Eyelash Conditioning Serum — Formulated with a Nano-Peptide Complex, Hyaluronic Acid, and Vitamin C & E Complex, ILASH nourishes the lash line so your natural lashes can look fuller and more defined over time. One stroke along the lash line nightly.
IBROW Eyebrow Conditioning Serum — Targets sparse and thinning brow areas with a Peptide Complex to help each hair look thicker and more defined. Applied twice daily.
IHAIR Hair Densifying Serum — Strengthens hair follicles while actively inhibiting DHT addressing one of the key drivers of hormonal hair thinning. ProVitamin B5 conditions each strand to reduce breakage.
All three serums are oil-free, fragrance-free, sulfate-free, and PETA Cruelty-Free certified.
